The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs. Because the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes", built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury. There is at lease one Fisher House at every major military medical facility to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. Annually, the Fisher House program serves more than 8,500 families, and have made available more than two million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990. |
Greg was born in Kingston, N.Y on August 15, 1962. His family moved to Seabrook, Maryland, where he spent his childhood and went to high school at St. Johns High School in D.C. After graduating, Greg attended James Madison University where he earned a BS Degree in Computer Science. His first job was at Gould, then Goddard Space Flight Center/Lockheed where he worked on a system installed on the Hubble Telescope. He spent 8 years thereafter working for IBM. Greg went on to become a Sr. Manager at MCI, where he worked for 10 years. There he received the Circle of Excellence Award three times. He began work with IT Cadre in December of 2004 as a Senior Engineer. Greg was an integral part of the team responsible for the design and implementation of key software. Greg also served as a senior manager who quickly became the office favorite. His brilliance and most of all true friendship and zest for life will never be forgotten. He was married to Wendy Mehlhorn whom he met the first week of his Sophomore year at James Madison, received his Masters Degree from the University of Maryland, and fathered two children, Kelsey and Drew. He belonged to St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was a 3rd Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. He was to assume the position of Grand Knight for his local counsel in June of 2006. The last 12 years he has lived with his family in Lovettsville, Virginia in what he considered God’s country. He loved to garden, exercise, travel and generally enjoy life itself. In his own words he wanted to "live this short life with fulfillment to myself and others and live it with intensity, thoughtfulness and wisdom”….and he did. |
